Frequently Asked Questions
Access & payments
What do I get when I pay?
Access to search and browse the full records in your chosen collection — or all collections if you buy the full archive. You can search by name and scroll through every entry. Access is through a password-protected account on this site.
Does my access expire?
No. All payments are one-off — there is no subscription and your access never expires. The full archive option also includes any new collections added in future, at no extra cost.
What is the difference between single-collection and full archive access?
A single-collection purchase (£2.50) gives you permanent access to one collection only. Full archive access (£9.99) covers all 22 current collections and every collection added in future. If you think you may return to search other records, the full archive is better value.
How do I pay?
Payments are processed securely by Stripe. You can pay by credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club), Apple Pay, Klarna, or Revolut Pay.
Before you buy
Can I check whether my ancestor is listed before I pay?
Each collection page shows a small number of sample entries so you can see the format and content. If you would like to know whether a specific name or surname appears before purchasing, you are welcome to contact me and I will let you know whether it is present. No further details will be given without payment.
Why are some collections free?
A small number of the smaller directories are available free of charge. These are shorter collections where charging seemed unreasonable. All other collections require payment to access the full records.
The records
Are these original documents?
No — these are transcriptions made from original out-of-copyright primary sources. The originals are held by archives, libraries and record offices. OldDocs makes the transcribed content searchable online. Each collection page notes the original source.
What do the abbreviations in the memorial inscription collections mean?
The most common is H.S. (headstone). Others you will encounter include: flat stone or ledger (a flat grave slab, usually flush with the ground), tablet (a wall-mounted memorial inside the church), vault or railed vault (a raised tomb, often enclosed by railings), and altar tomb (a large chest-style monument). Where inscriptions are worn or partially illegible, missing text is indicated by ....
Can I copy records for my own research?
Yes — you are welcome to copy individual entries for your own personal or family history research. The transcriptions may not be republished on other websites, included in commercial products, or distributed in bulk without permission.
I think there is an error in a transcription — what should I do?
Please get in touch and describe the entry and the issue. Transcriptions are made carefully from the original sources, but errors do occur — particularly where the original was damaged or difficult to read. Genuine corrections are appreciated and will be fixed.
Are more collections being added?
Yes. New transcriptions are added as they are completed. Full archive access includes all future collections at no extra cost.
Account & searching
Do I need to create an account?
Yes. When you purchase access you will be asked to create a username and password. This is how the site recognises you when you return. You can log in at any time using the login page.
I have forgotten my password — what do I do?
Use the Forgotten password link on the login page and a reset link will be sent to your email address.
Does the search work across all collections at once?
No — each collection has its own search box which filters the records on that page. There is no single search across the whole archive. If you are looking for a name across multiple collections, you will need to search each one individually.
